Why Walk?

The winter and spring of 2020 saw numerous Black men and women killed at the hands of police. Our country was struggling through the most divisive political dynamic since the Civil War. The COVID-19 pandemic began to creep into our lives, infecting thousands, then millions, and changing every aspect of our existence (travel, work, family relationships, technology, education, the economy, health care…the list goes on). Here on Cape Cod, the historical, political, and social context mirrored that of the country: divisiveness; complacency and complicity in perpetuating a system of economic and racial injustice; an aging population with a strained health care system; and a sense of isolation from the “mainland.” I heard more than one neighbor implore: “Can’t we just close the bridges?” (Yes, Cape Cod is technically a peninsula with a canal that cuts if off from the mainland of Massachusetts.) I knew that they meant not just to visitors and COVID, but to the issues of social and racial justice happening “over there.”
